How I Got Started in UX

I’ve always loved visual art and started my career as a storyboard artist at Nickelodeon, teaching young children about teamwork and foundational math skills.

As much as I loved storyboarding, I wanted work that encompassed my other passions- my love of research, a desire to understand how people shape their environment and community, and the need for personal interaction and service-oriented work.

I transitioned from storyboarding to civic engagement and public design, where I have focused on qualitative research methods and in-person interactions (listening, empathizing) to help communities shape public policies and civic design that affect their daily lives and environment.

UX is a natural fit for my skills and strengths- a blend of visual design, research, creative thinking and problem solving that is informed by and serves the needs of users.

My Design Approach

Putting People First

I make sure the user is involved in understanding and providing feedback on the police accountability system. I do this through a variety of research methods, some high-tech, and also just plain old listening. I use this feedback to inform design decisions and ideas.

Research-informed Design and Strategy

I love well-crafted research plans. I have led focus groups, surveys, and interviews for public, private, and nonprofit clients, and then analyze, write up, and communicate the findings to various audiences. This research has informed public policies, community planning and development, housing development, and strategic plans to best serve its users and stakeholders.

Narrative Storytelling

I am a skilled visual designer and artist, with training and experience in informational and graphic design, as well as hand-drawn sketching, story boarding, film/video, and animation. I worked professionally as a storyboard artist and 2D animator for 5 years in New York City and hold a BFA in Film & Television from New York University. I use this to communicate research findings and design ideas.

When Not Working…

Ideally: You’ll find me on an outdoor adventure appreciating nature’s design and attempting to capture it all in a watercolor sketch.

Most likely: Hanging with my family, enjoying weekend waffles and daily walks.
